Abstract

This study investigates the profound impact of Qur’anic rhetoric on the development of mystical metaphors in Persian literary tradition. It argues that Persian Sufi poets consciously draw upon Qur’anic stylistic devices—such as metaphor, imagery, rhythm, and narrative structure—to construct a rich symbolic language capable of expressing mystical experience. Through textual analysis of selected Persian works, the paper traces how Qur’anic rhetorical patterns are recontextualized within poetic discourse to articulate themes of divine love, annihilation (fanāʾ), and spiritual ascent. The study highlights the Qur’an’s role not only as a source of theological content but also as a model of aesthetic and rhetorical excellence that shapes literary creativity. By situating Persian mystical metaphors within the broader framework of Qur’anic discourse, the research demonstrates a deep interdependence between scripture and literature. This interrelationship underscores the continuity of Islamic intellectual and aesthetic traditions and reveals how sacred rhetoric informs the imaginative and expressive capacities of Persian Sufi poetry.
